The Mirror Effect in Leadership
What happens when you realize the obstacle you’re facing might also be one you’re creating?
The Mirror Effect in Leadership
Recently, I observed a group of talented, multidisciplinary professionals grappling with a common challenge: everyone was pushing for increased efficiency, but only within their own area of responsibility.
Each team had a clear idea of what others should do to help the organization improve but rarely looked inward at their own practices.
It was a classic "mirror moment", a chance to reflect on how our own actions impact the bigger picture.
We often expect others to value our priorities yet overlook how our behavior may unintentionally hinder their progress.
Here’s the simple truth: What frustrates us in others often reflects what we aren’t ready to acknowledge in ourselves.
When teams pause to honestly look in that mirror, transformation begins. It’s then that real collaboration and growth can take root.
True leadership isn’t about telling others what to do, it’s about leading by example. We must be the first to shift, demonstrating the behaviors we want to see from our teams, peers, and leaders. Let your reflection in the mirror inspire positive and productive change.
Give what you want… Get what you want!
